About the Italian language

Present day Italian is a relatively new language; Italy became a nation only in 1867, and even as recent as fifty years ago, many Italians only spoke their own regional language or dialect. Italy is still divided into regions. However nowadays everyone in Italy is able to speak standard Italian. Apart from in Italy itself, Italian speakers can be found in the Italian-speaking cantons of Switzerland, and in a few areas of Slovania and Croatia and of course in all countries to which Italians have emigrated. Unlike English, which has several different ways of pronouncing the same combination of letters, Italian pronunciation is easy. Once you know the rules you can’t really go wrong!
